Il tutto ebbe inizio questa primavera quando il Dr. Gippetto visitò l' Irlanda per studi e ricerche. Da coscienzioso studioso non mancò di far visita all'Istituto Italiano di Cultura che aveva sentito menzionare da molti come uno tra gli enti culturali più attivi in città.

Gliene detti le spiegazioni: l'Irlanda, anche se ormai alla fine della Celtic Tiger, non lesinava fondi nell'intento di attrarre cultura europea ed internazionale a Dublino ed il nostro Istituto si stava rivelando un ottimo partner in quanto - grazie ai corsi di lingua italiana - riusciva a realizzare delle entrate significative che si traducevano in collaborazioni culturali di altissimo livello. Tutto ciò non andava disgiunto dal fatto che gli irlandesi erano e sono pienamente consapevoli che, in fatto di cultura cultura, l'Italia è un tasto che emette note speciali se non uniche: un interlocutore imprescindibile.

Dopo la presentazione personale, il Presidente Gippetto, mi sottopose l'avventura di WANTED... che non conoscevo. Mi vide totalmente catturato dalla missione della sua organizzazione e simultaneamente ci aprimmo con entusiasmo ad una collaborazione che si concretizzerà nei prossimi giorni in occasione dell'VIII^ settimana della Lingua italiana nel mondo.

Non sta a me teorizzare sull'importanza della salvaguardia della nostra memoria storica e del nostro patrimonio artistico, credo che questi temi "vadano" da sè e dire ciò in Irlanda è come guardarsi allo specchio tanto forti sono questi sentimenti anche nell'isola verde.

Ma attenzione, visitare il sito di WANTED…presi per il verso giusto, significa procurarsi delle ferite che uno non si attende di ricevere da un sito culturale. Sotto le immagini e le foto commentate vi sono frasi ricorrenti quali "esportata illegalmente...", "trafugata a Monreale..." che valgono una pugnalata, anche se virtuale.

Da questo dolore virtuale credo derivi la presa di coscienza che il patrimonio culturale di ogni Paese deve far parte, deve concorre a formare quello più ampio "dell'umanita'", ma è pur vero che l'identità d'origine, la proprietà, l'imprinting culturale dei pezzi unici è indelebile e va rispettato come tale.

Partendo in questa occasione dalla Sicilia (sì, siamo siciliani e al contempo italiani, siamo italiani e al contempo europei e via dicendo, questo è indubbiamente un atteggiamento intelligente e progressista) va però detto a tutto fiato che l'Afrodite di Morgantina è di Morgantina e non di Malibù.

Invito tutti a diventare sostenitori e collaboratori di WANTED - non importa a quale latitudine ed in quale posto del globo ci si trovi - e di discutere insieme.

Qui in Irlanda abbiamo già iniziato.

Istituto Italiano di Cultura - Dublin

Everything began in spring when Dr Gippetto visited Ireland on a research trip. Being a conscientious student he also made sure to visit the Istituto Italiano di Cultura which he had heard described as one of Dublin's most active cultural centres.

I explained the reasons for this hyper-activity to him: Ireland, even though it was now witnessing the end of the Celtic Tiger, was still investing significant resources on attracting European and international culture to Dublin and our Istituto was proving an ideal partner as- thanks to the success of its Italian language courses- it managed to realise significant funds which were then expended in cultural collaborations of the highest quality. All of which was closely tied to the fact that the Irish were and are fully conscious that, in matters of culture, Italy is a special- if not unique- country: an indispensable partner.

Completed the formalities of a first meeting, President Gippetto spoke to me about the endeavour of WANTED … of which I had no knowledge. He witnessed my total absorption in his organization's mission and we began simultaneously- and with great enthusiasm- to envisage a collaboration which will materialize in the near future on the occasion of the VIII Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo.

It is not my role to theorize on the importance of the protection of our historical memory and our artistic patrimony, believing that these themes justify themselves. Indeed, to make such statements in Ireland is like looking into a mirror so strong are these feelings in the emerald isle.

But exercise a little caution: a visit to the web site of WANTED … with an open mind, will result in a type of self-inflicted wound which one does not expect from a cultural site. The texts beneath the images and photos carry such recurring phrases as "exported illegally" or "smuggled to Malibu'" which are truly like knife wounds, even if only in a virtual sense.

I believe that this virtual pain has given rise to the realization that the cultural patrimony of every country must be part of and must share in the formation of the wider patrimony of "humanity", but it is equally true that the original identity, the ownership, the cultural imprint of unique works of art is indelible and must be respected for this reason.

Taking Sicily as our point of departure on this occasion (yes, we are Sicilian and Italian at the same time, we are Italian and European at the same time and so on; this is undoubtedly a progressive and intelligent attitude) it must be said at the top of our voices that the Aphrodite of Morgantina belongs in Morgantina and not in Malibu.

I invite everybody to become supporters and collaborators of WANTED- one's geographical location has no importance in this matter- and to discuss these matters together.

Here in Ireland we have already begun.
